Search “best physiotherapy clinic in JLT” on Google. Then ask ChatGPT the same question.

Chances are, the same two or three names keep showing up. And some perfectly good clinics a few streets away never appear at all.

This isn’t random. In the UAE, it’s also getting expensive to ignore. According to Microsoft’s AI Diffusion Report, the UAE ranked first in the world for AI adoption in Q1 2026, with 70.1% of its working-age population using AI tools, well above the 17.8% global average. Your customers are asking AI first.

Here’s a part to make you think. When Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands, it found that 26% had no mentions in AI Overviews at all. Not low visibility. None.

This guide explains how AI citations, brand mentions and entity signals decide which side of that line your business lands on, and what to fix first.

Citation Isn’t Ranking: A Different Mechanism Entirely

Most businesses assume AI Overviews simply summarise the top Google results. A year ago, that was roughly true.

Ahrefs’ earlier research found around 76% of AI Overview citations came straight from the top 10 in July 2025. Its March 2026 update, covering 863,000 keyword SERPs and 4 million cited URLs, found that figure had dropped to about 38%, with the remainder split almost equally between positions 11 to 100 and pages outside the top 100.

So what changed? Understanding how AI Overviews choose sources starts with a process called query fan-out. Google confirms that AI Overviews and AI Mode may run several related searches across subtopics and data sources to build a single answer. AI Overviews have also been running on Gemini 3 since January 2026.

In plain terms, when someone asks “which Dubai clinic is best for sports injuries”, Google may also quietly search for reviews, prices, specialists, locations and comparisons. Pages that keep appearing across those sub-searches get picked.

Ranking still helps. Top-10 pages remain the single biggest group of citations. But ranking for one keyword is no longer enough. The system is checking whether the wider web agrees you’re relevant.

That’s where brand mentions SEO comes in. If you’re still building the ranking side, our guide on moving from SEO to GEO covers the foundations.

Why Consistent Brand Mentions Across the Web Matter More Than Volume

In Ahrefs’ 75,000-brand study, branded web mentions showed the strongest correlation with AI Overview visibility, at 0.664, while link metrics showed only moderate to weak correlations.

But “get more mentions” is the wrong takeaway.

AI models learn through association. If your brand keeps appearing next to the same service, the same area and the same type of customer, the model builds a clear picture of who you are. If every mention describes you differently, that picture blurs.

This is what entity consistency AI search systems reward. Think of it as your brand’s fingerprint: the same name, category and location, every single time.

Common mismatches we see with Dubai businesses:

  • The trade licence name on one listing and the trading name on another
  • “Al Barsha” on Google Business Profile, “Barsha Heights” on a directory and “Tecom” on Instagram
  • “Interior design studio” on your website but “furniture shop” on a listings site
  • An old phone number still live on three directories

Each one gives AI a small reason to doubt whether these mentions belong to the same business.

Ten mentions that describe you the same way beat fifty that don’t. That’s the core of how good AI citations brand mentions work: clarity first, then scale. It’s also why a clear brand identity matters far beyond your logo, and why branding and SEO now need to be planned together.

The Role of Third-Party Corroboration Over Self-Description

Your website says you’re the best in Dubai. So does every competitors.

AI systems account for this. Muck Rack’s May 2026 analysis of more than 25 million links found that earned media made up 84% of citations across ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, while paid and advertorial content made up just 0.3%.

That’s the clearest answer to getting cited by ChatGPT: someone other than you has to say it.

Self-description is a claim. Third-party coverage is evidence.

For AI search visibility Dubai brands, credible corroboration looks like a feature in a regional publication, a listing with a respected industry body, a podcast interview, a thread in Dubai, or Google reviews that describe exactly what you did for the customer.

Video deserves special attention. Ahrefs reports that YouTube is now the most cited domain in AI Overviews, and its 75,000-brand research found that YouTube mentions in titles, transcripts and descriptions were the strongest correlating factor with AI Overview visibility. A well-planned video production programme, or genuine reviews from creator partnerships, creates exactly the kind of third-party text AI can read.

None of this is new to your customers, either. As we found when looking at how UAE consumers judge brand reputation, people already trust what others say about you over what you say about yourself. AI simply does the same thing at scale.

How Structured Data Feeds the Citation Decision

Let’s clear up a myth first. Google states that you don’t need any special schema.org structured data, AI text files or new markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

So, schema isn’t a citation button. Structured data won’t change how AI Overviews choose sources on its own. What it does is remove ambiguity, which makes you easier to verify.

Google says Organization markup on your home page can help it understand your administrative details and tell your organization apart from others. The sameAs property lets you list URLs of your profiles on other sites, such as social media or review platforms. That connects “you on your website” with “you on LinkedIn, Instagram and Google Business Profile”.

That’s entity consistency AI search in machine-readable form.

For local businesses such as clinics, restaurants or showrooms, Google recommends using the most specific LocalBusiness subtype available rather than a generic type.

One rule matter more than the rest. Google advises that your structured data should match the visible text on the page, and that your Business Profile information should be kept up to date. Schema that says “Dubai Marina” on a page that says “JLT” creates the very conflict you’re trying to fix.

The easiest route is to build schema into your site from day one during web design, then keep it aligned with your listings using a Google Business Profile checklist.

Case Pattern: Two Similar Dubai Businesses, Two Different Outcomes

Here’s an illustrative composite based on patterns that come up repeatedly in AI visibility audits. The studios are invented. The pattern isn’t.

Two interior fit-out studios in Al Quoz. Similar size, similar portfolios, and both rank on page one for “villa renovation Dubai”.

Ask an AI tool for villa renovation recommendations, and only Studio A gets named.

Studio B wasn’t worse at interiors. It was harder to verify.

On AI citations, brand mentions, and corroboration, it lost on almost every row. That’s the reality of AI search visibility Dubai businesses now face: good work isn’t enough if the web can’t confirm it.

What to Fix First If You’re Never Being Cited

Most AI citations brand mention problems trace back to the same few gaps. Fix them in this order:

  1. Get a baseline: Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Mode ten questions your customers would ask. Note who gets named and which sources are cited. You can also run a quick Digital + AI Visibility Report to see where you stand.
  2. Fix your entity basics: One name, one category, one address format, one phone number. Start with Google Business Profile, then the main directories. Our local SEO guide for Dubai service businesses walks through this.
  3. Rewrite your About and service pages: Say what you do, where, and for whom, in plain language that matches your listings.
  4. Add Organization or LocalBusiness schema with sameAs links to your official profiles.
  5. Earn one credible third-party mention a month: Expert comments, local features, podcasts or partner case studies all count. This is where brand mentions SEO compounds.
  6. Ask for specific reviews: “Thanks for the kitchen refit in Arabian Ranches” teaches AI far more than “great service”.
  7. Answer real questions on your site: Pricing, timelines and comparisons are what fan-out queries look for. A solid content strategy turns these into pages AI can cite.

Be patient. Like traditional SEO in Dubai, getting cited by ChatGPT and AI Overviews takes months of consistent signals, not a single fix.

FAQs

  • 1. Does having more backlinks guarantee more AI citations?

No. Ahrefs found that link metrics had only moderate to weak correlations with AI Overview visibility, while branded web mentions, whether linked or unlinked, showed the strongest correlation. When it comes to AI citations, brand mentions, and context carry more weight. Backlinks still support rankings, which still help.

  • 2. Can a brand be cited by AI without ranking on page one of Google?

Yes. In Ahrefs’ March 2026 data, around 31% of AI Overview citations came from pages that didn’t rank in the top 100 for that query. Because of query fan-out, how AI Overviews choose sources depends on related searches too, not just the original keyword.

  • 3. How do inconsistent business listings hurt AI citation chances?

Conflicting names, addresses or categories make it harder for AI to confirm that different mentions refer to the same business. Your signals split instead of stacking up. Strong entity consistency AI search signals start with matching details on your website, Google Business Profile and every directory listing.

  • 4. Is this the same thing as traditional brand mention tracking?

Not quite. Traditional tracking counts mentions and sentiment for PR reporting. AI visibility tracking asks different questions: do AI tools name you; how do they describe you, and which sources do they cite? Good brand mentions SEO uses both.
